Don’t be the White Rabbit…

“I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye!, I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!!” If you have seen the movie Alice in Wonderland, or read the book, you are aware of who the White Rabbit is. Punctuality is probably one of the most important things to me when it comes to any commitment–school, work, a dinner date, a workout date, etc. We are in school from 10am-9pm Monday-Wednesday. Let’s be real, 10am is not an early start time. A policy at school is that if you call to say that you’re going to be more than a few minutes late, they just tell you not to come. Some people may get upset about this, but I think that it is fantastic. When we get out there and started with our careers, we cannot be strolling in 5 minutes late every single day. You can’t keep your guests waiting, and it certainly isn’t fair to the rest of your team that got there on time. It drives me bonkers when people are late, but hey, I guess, in a way, it’s their loss.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of working with Ginger Boyle and Dean Roybal from Planet Salon in Beverly Hills. Because I am so strict on myself about being on time, my body has a ridiculous natural alarm clock that will wake me up very early on important days. Naturally, it woke me up at 5:45am yesterday, and there was absolutely no way I was falling back asleep. Even though I forced myself to take a long time getting ready, I still wound up at school 45 minutes before their class began. I had just planned on using that time to study and wait outside the doors so that I could get a good seat. Little did I know, I would actually get to be a model for an updo from Dean!  It was fantastic to be able to work with both of them because they are not only great hairdressers, but really great people.

I think that getting far in this industry often times means doing a lot of things without much monetary reward at first. If you want to work on fashion week or work with the big leagues, it will probably mean low pay, long hours, and lots of extra work…but you do it because you love it and because you aspire to be someone better. If you are a late riser or a chronic snoozer, change your habits. Being punctual says that you’re eager, you’re passionate, you’re serious. It speaks volumes to your character, so do yourself a favor and don’t be the White Rabbit–be present physically and mentally. You’ll notice the change.
